Data Loss Nightmares? - Online Backup Is The Cure

You can stop flinching every time your computer freezes or your jump drive won’t pull up the document you need. Your fears about data loss and expensive data recovery can be replaced with the security of online data backup.

Online backup is a preventative measure that has eliminated the need for old fashioned and expensive data recovery methods. Now you can backup your data before a disaster and if catastrophe hits you can restore your data with a click of the mouse.

Getting online backup is simple, but with the many online backups available there are a few key elements to look for:

  1. Security: Most online backups transfer data over the web and store the files in a data center. You want to be certain your data is secure at both levels. Online backup providers that encrypt the data with a high-level encryption and then send the encrypted data through a secured socket layer (SSL) are ideal. Additionally, look for a provider that stores files in a data center ranked at a tier 3 or 4. These data centers are designed to withstand power surges, power outages most natural disasters.
  2. Online Access: Data centers that provide online access to your backed-up documents are ideal. With web access you can restore files from anywhere in the world. That way if you can’t make it to your office or home due to a disaster you still have the documents you need to keep your life in order.
  3. Automated Backups: Automated backups occur automatically, usually once a day. This saves you time because you don’t have to spend hours uploading files to a hard drive or downloading documents onto a CD. You don’t even have to remember to backup with automated backups.
  4. Back up Process: Look for a provider that does block level and incremental backups because your computer will have to do less work. That way only the changes you make to your files will be backed up instead of the whole file backing up repeatedly.
  5. Simplicity: Some online backups are complex and restores can be difficult. Look for a solution that keeps it simple and allows you to restore one file at a time without having to download everything backed up previously.
  6. Support: Make sure the online backup provider has a trained support team available for trouble shooting. Not all online backups offer support, but it is nice to know help is a phone call away when a problem arises.
